  • a filter that removes dust from the air that passes through it

  • A particulate air filter is a device composed of fibrous materials which removes solid particulates such as dust, pollen, mold, and bacteria from the air.

  • (air filters) Adhesive filters made of metal or various fibers that are coated with an adhesive liquid to which particles of lint and dust adhere. These filters will remove as much as 90% of the dirt if they do not become clogged. The more common filters are of the throwaway or disposable type.

  • Make (something or someone) free of dirt, marks, or mess, esp. by washing, wiping, or brushing

  • Remove the innards of (fish or poultry) prior to cooking

  • make clean by removing dirt, filth, or unwanted substances from; "Clean the stove!"; "The dentist cleaned my teeth"

  • clean and jerk: a weightlift in which the barbell is lifted to shoulder height and then jerked overhead

Here's a project I'm working on. It's an air filter hooked up to my main computer. The hope is to keep the temperature down and the components clean.

This is still in the test faze. As you can see I have tape to hold the pipe in place on the filter and a cardboard panel on the tower with the air port connection. Inside there are four fans, 120mm in the power supply and on the hard drives and 80mm on the CPU, ram and motherboard CPU.

If all works out as planned I will change the cardboard to a clear plastic to monitor the workings inside and attach the pipe fitting securely.

Any feedback is welcomed.

Summer 2000, Bird's eye view of dredge, pipeline, Pierce Mill Cove and Sawyer Street

Summer 2000, Bird's eye view of dredge, pipeline, Pierce Mill Cove and Sawyer Street

The Sawyer Street de-sanding facility is the first of two contaminated sediment processing areas. Dredging sediment is pumped to a building at the end of Sawyer Street to filter out the larger more coarse material from the dredged sediment such as sand, shells and small rocks.

The coarser sand is filtered out of the finer grain, silty sediment which the majority of the PCBs are attached to. The remaining slurry of silt, sea water, and PCB contamination is then pumped again to a de-watering facility further down the harbor, where the water is pressed out, treated to stringent standards, and the resulting de-watered sediment (which is similar to hard packed soil in consistency) is properly disposed of at licensed off site landfills.

Science Fun Fact (or at least interesting to some):

Why do PCBs like silt better than sand?

If you were to compare a cupful of sand versus a cupful of silt, there would be more particle surface area in the cupful of silt. Since PCBs 'stick' to the surface area of something, there would be more PCBs in the cupful of silt.

More particles = more surface area = more PCBs.

Deeper into chemistry:

Silt comes from the breakdown of organic materials (plant and organisms). Chemical compounds that are made up of hydrocarbons (PCBs - polychlorinated biphenyls) are attracted to these organic surfaces because of the carbon content. Even more reason for the PCBs to attach themselves moreso to silt than to sand.

Childhood scar

Childhood scar

I decided to take a picture of this.

I was cutting airline tubing (for a fish tank; back then we only had bubble filters and air pumps) with a very sharp steak knife. I couldn't find scissors or something, I dunno; I was 10. I made a bend in the tube and dragged along the kink to make a clean cut.

The knife was FAR sharper than I thought, and the knife kept going and cut off a chunk of my knuckle like it was butter. In a panic, put the chunk of the knuckle back on my finger and sealed it shut with a band-aid and told no one. My parents were pretty neglectful, so they never knew anything was amiss, despite the sheer amount of blood I lost. It would never heal properly so for weeks I'd peel the band-aid off, press down on the wound, and try and keep it from peeling back again. Eventually, the scar healed along the bend line of the skin, except for the portion you see here which was on the edge of the wound and never got a good seal.

To this day, I have the scar because it never healed right.

Colors of Light and Shadows

Content Background:

The color an object appears to be when a person looks at it is not because the object itself is that color. A person’s eyes perceive objects to be certain colors because of the light that hits the object. If no light is present, the object cannot be seen; therefore, it will appear black. The color that an object appears to be is a result of the interactions between different frequencies of visible light waves with the atoms of the materials the objects are made of. Many objects contain certain atoms that are capable of selectively absorbing or reflecting one or more frequencies of light. The frequencies of light that become reflected to a person’s eyes will contribute to the color the person perceives the object to be. The primary colors of light are red, green, and blue. When added together, they produce white light which is the existence of all colors of the visible light spectrum. The visible spectrum is what human eyes are sensitive to, and it’s a small piece of the electromagnetic spectrum. Each color is made from a certain wavelength and frequency of light. When two primary colors are added together, they produce a secondary color; cyan, yellow or magenta. Red and green will make yellow; green and blue will make cyan; blue and red will make magenta. If an object is perceived as a primary color of light, that means the object’s atoms are capable of absorbing all of the colors of the visible light spectrum except that primary color which it reflects. So if an object looks red, it absorbs green and blue and reflects red. The same thing happens for secondary colors—if an object appears magenta, it absorbs green and reflects the red and blue hitting it (because magenta is made of red and blue light). If an object produces a shadow, the color of light that hits the object will be absent in the shadow. That is why the sunlight (white light) produces black shadows—no light is present in the shadow. Depending on the colors of light hitting the object, and the angle that the lights are hitting it, the colors of the shadow may vary. There can be three different lights shining on an object at three different angles, and the shadow will have more than three different colors.
Description of Photographs:
All of the pictures were taken at the same spot, under the same conditions, at the same time and with the same type of camera. The only difference is the colors of light that were shined upon the object. The pictures were taken inside of my house at noon on Wednesday April 27th. The conditions were at room temperature and all of the lights were off. I had to block the windows from the sunlight as much as possible so the colors from the flashlights would be more visible. I set up a white poster for the background of all of the pictures. I took them in the hall of my house because it was the darkest area with the least amount of sunlight. I used a GE 7.0 megapixel A735 Digital Camera; there was no extra filter or anything used for these pictures and the flash was turned off. A stool was set up about a foot away from the poster and in line with it. The flashlights rested on the stool. The object the lights are shining on is a plastic, white cup. Picture 1 is set up with the blue flashlight shining on the cup. Notice that the cup itself appears blue and the shadow of the cup is black, but the light around the shadow is blue. Picture 2 is set up with a red flashlight on the left and a green flashlight on the right and they are angled to shine on the same spot of the cup. Notice how the cup appears yellow, the colors of the shadows are red, green and black, and how the light around the shadows is yellow. Pictures 3, 4, 5, and 6 are of the same thing, but from different viewpoints. The flashlights are set up with the blue flashlight on the left, the green flashlight in the middle, and the red flashlight on the right all angled to the same point on the cup. Notice how the cup appears white, the shadows are all different colors with the middle one appearing black, and the light around the shadows is white.
Explanation of Photographs:
Before I start explaining, it is very important to understand that each light produced its own shadow for the cup and the part of that light that is not block by the cup is shined on the background. In picture 1 the cup appears blue and gives off a black shadow. The cup is originally white when shined on with white light, so this cup’s atoms are capable of reflecting everything that shines on it. The blue light is reflected back to our eyes and this is why it appears blue. For the shadow, it is black because the cup is not capable of transmitting any light; it just reflects and absorbs. Shadows are made from the light being absent. That brings up the other point as to why the light around the cup is blue. The blue light not hitting the cup diffracts around it and shines on the white background behind it. So it

  • In photography and optics, a neutral density filter or ND filter can be a colorless (clear) or grey filter. An ideal neutral density filter reduces and/or modifies intensity of all wavelengths or colors of light equally, giving no changes in hue of color rendition.

  • (ND Filters) Neutral Density filters can be attached to the lens of a camera to assist in preventing overexposure of an image. Prosumer camcorders have ND filters built in.

  • A filter that attenuates light evenly over the visible light spectrum. It reduces the light entering a lens, thus forcing the iris to open to its maximum.

This filter is great for evening out difficult lighting situations for more uniform exposure. Being a High-Trans Titanium Filter This filter has very high transmissive properties utilizing multicoatings and a Titanium oxide component. These filters are mounted in a light weight metal ring with a matte black anti reflective inner ring and a Titanium finnish outer ring to identify the titanium oxide componenet in the filter. The new coatings for this filter increases hardness and reduces the suceptibility to smearing.

"Conkin" type filter holder, + Adaptor rings

"Conkin" type filter holder, + Adaptor rings

The square box is a graduated ND filter - a "secret weapon" of landscape shooters, especially in the pre-Digital and pre-HDR days. (Hell, I'll still use it now, as HDR images that I've been able to make suffers from excessive noise and IQ degradation due to the need to stack 3 different exposures. Clouds and tree leaves tends to move...)

The filter holder isn't the best... but it does the job fine. Surface finish is quite rough - you can see the tool marks on the injection molding. But, hey, it holds a piece of glass that does not need to be optically aligned very precisely...

The 72 and 77mm adaptor rings mount the filter holder to the lens. I can free-rotate the holder and slide the graduated ND filter to change the positioning of the gradient.

The 3rd ring is a 72-77mm step-up converter. My EF-S10-22mm is 77mm, while my EF24-135 walk-around is a 72mm. In the future I will be upgrading to L-glass (all L-Zooms are 77mm) and I can eliminate the hassle and expense of stocking multiple filter diameters...

For a year now I have been trying to get some Lee Filters graduated neutral density filters for my 24-70 lens (which would also fit the 70-200). Lee Filters has a great reputation, but their business model just really sucks... or at least the production capacity part of their model. They are darn near impossible to find to buy.

It has taken me a year to find stock. I got the holder maybe six months ago. Then a month ago I was able to get a couple filters. And today the 77mm adapter ring finally arrived. Woohoooo--now I've got a functioning set!!!!

Now, if the *&%*^# SW-150 for the Nikon 14-24/2.8 would just come into stock somewhere. Arg.

And I need to get a "big stopper" (10-stop ND), but I really begrudge the cost of it.
